Working Groups
A terrific amount of work goes into The Festival each year. To spread the load, this is carried by different members of the Festival Team. The 2009 Team includes:
- Programme and events (Jane Johnson and Lucie Smith)
- Press and media (Jo Morgan and Phil Minett)
- Retailers and Town Centre (Julie Eden)
- Marketing Communications (Gemma Hussey and Alistair Wayne)
- Sponsorship (Lucie Smith and Robin Millar)
- Legal, Planning and Funding (Robin Millar and Paul Cullen)
- Links and partners (Stephen Wallis, Noel Byrne, Lisa Chambers)
The team also includes other local businesses and individuals who help with events and the general business of the team. Graham Abbey at Factotum provides us with our telephone support and handles income. If you are interested in investing in Newmarket and want to help out, we would love to hear from you.
A Brief History
The Newmarket Festival Team was set up in 2006. Founder Members who worked on the 2007 Festival include Lisa Hancock (former CEO of the racourse), Gaynor Haxby (Racecourse Marketing Manager), Robin Millar (local Councillor), Emma Joel (local business woman and Chairman of Newmarket Business Action), Alistair Wayne (of Media Managers Ltd., Cambridge), Noel Byrne (Bedford Lodge Hotel and MD of Barnham-Broom), Lucie Smith (Swynford Paddocks Hotel) and Phil Minett (Editor, Newmarket Journal).
The 2007 also included Russell Sims (Barclays Bank, Newmarket) and Emma Bailey (TEAM Events).
Festival 2008
In 2008 the Team was strengthened with the addtion of three new faces. The Rev Graham Locking was brought on board to build the community focus. Graham is well known around Newmarket and is closely associated with the work of groups such as Racing Welfare. Paul Cullen, a partner at Price Bailey, Cambridge is a local man, a keen raccegoer and helping with legal and financial preparations to cope with the growing work. Finally, Stephen Wallis the new CEO at the racecourse completed the new team and has brought many fresh ideas and his experience of festivals in Epsom to bear.
Festival 2009
A new year and new faces! The team is listed above but the most recent addition is Suffolk County Council Lisa Chambers. Lisa is the Executive Member for Culture and Economic Development – a perfect fit for the work and aims of the Festival.
